Rosemary

I’m Rosemary, and I do most of the writing around here.

I earned my PhD in Communication and intended to become a professor and full-time academic, but life did what life does, and now I’m a professional researcher, writer, and full-time advocate for my daughter.

I like Thai food, that smell when honeysuckles bloom for the first time, and the color purple.

Life did what life does

Andrew

Andrew’s a work-from-home small business consultant and crazy good dad to our kids.

He's usually a lot more patient than me, and he also knows how to walk through Target without buying everything, so we balance each other out nicely.

Want to meet a dad who busts through all the stereotypes of fathers as less involved, less knowledgeable, and less nurturing than mothers? Meet Andrew.

Ruby

Ruby is 10 and leads the troop. She’s headstrong, feisty, and has a strong sense of justice and fairness. She likes art and wolves, and she can nearly always be found with her nose in a book.

Ruby wanted me to tell you the most important thing you should know about her is, “I love animals.”

Some people are born to lead and advocate for others. That's Ruby.

Cortez

Cortez is 7 and a funny, wild boy with eyelashes for days. He likes Harry Potter (understatement of the year), Roblox, and Legos.

When I asked him the most important thing you should know about him, he said, “That I’ve been to Disney World.”

He's Evelyn's therapist, advocate, and best friend.

Evelyn

Evelyn is 4, and when she was born, it was like she had always been a part of our family. She just fit in so seamlessly.

She loves Peppa Pig, Vampirina and playing outside. She can sing any song after hearing it once or twice, but she has apraxia of speech so sometimes she can be a little difficult to understand.

Starting around 15 months old, Evie soldiered through a bajillion medical tests. She was finally diagnosed with POLG-related mitochondrial depletion syndrome in January 2017, when she was 3.

Rusty

Rusty is a 1½ year old heeler mix. We bought him on a whim in a gas station parking lot – probably not the best way to get a dog.

He is way too wild, sheds far too much, and is just ridiculously devoted to us. He’s a mess, but aren't we all? I love to watch Evelyn love on him.
